ENGLISH TWENTY CLUB

NOTTS. & DERBY INTER-COUNTY SHOOT

Shooting took place at Trent Range yesterday in connection with the English Twenty Club's county rifle championship between teams representing Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The championship is conducted on the knock-out principle, and Notts., who succeeded by the narrow margin of three points, qualified for the second round. The conditions were the same as for the first stage of the King's Prize, namely, seven shots at 200 yards, 500 yards, and 600 yards.

The Nottinghamshire Civilian Rifle Club was principally formed from retired members of the Robin Hood Rifles and their activities have appeared in these reports for several years past. The Ashworth Challenge Cup was presented to the club in 1906 by Major J Ashworth of the Robin Hood Rifles.

These are the scores entered for the third of the six shoots leading up to the award of the Ashworth Cup. Below are the scores for the fourth shoot, which was shot concurrently with a friendly match between the NCRC and Carrington RC.

Nottingham Daily Express, Friday, 18 September 1908.

NOTTS. CIVILIAN RIFLE CLUB.

In the third shoot for the Challenge Cup presented to the Notts. Civilian Rifle Club by Major J. Ashworth, which took place in the Trent Range yesterday, the following cards were returned:–

 200yds 500yds 600yds     Ttl.
Captain H. Hansen 32 33 28 93
Lieutenant G.H. Stubington 33 34 25 92
Mr. A.E. Sutton 32 28 28 88

Two cards were not returned. There are six shoots in the competition, the four best of which count for the trophy, which is competed for annually, and becomes the sole property of the member who wins it three times.

Carrington Rifle Club was formed in 1906 and had a miniature range opened that year. They were tempted out to try their hand at the longer ranges at Trent.

They were beaten by the Notts. Civilian RC, despite a disastrous shoot by the NCRC's fifth man, who remains suitably anonymous. However the report considers their performance creditable for a first team outing.
