THE BISLEY MEETING
OPENING STAGES OF THE KING'S PRIZE

The volunteers to-day enter on the great competition of the year for his Majesty the King's prize by shooting at the 200 yards range, seven shots with the service rifle. There are 1,556 entries, as compared with 1,530 last year and the competitors represent nearly every portion of the King's dominions. Although the great contest begins this afternoon it will not be concluded until Saturday next, when the winner of the coveted gold medal will be decided. There are various stages, however, to go through before the end is reached. The first stage will be concluded to-morrow at 500 and 600 yards, seven shots at each distance, and the volunteer with the best aggregate at the three distances becomes the winner of the bronze medal. The first 300 in the first stage will be entitled to fire in the second stage on Friday next, when 20 shots are fired at 600 yards. The man with the highest aggregate becomes the silver medallist, and the first 100 will be entitled to fire in the third stage. This is fixed for Saturday next, when the one hundred men left in each fire ten rounds at each distance of 800, 900, and 1,000 yards. The man with the best aggregate, counting all three stages, wins the King's Gold Medal, and the places of the other 99 are decided by their aggregates. Last year the prize was won (for the second time) by Colour-Sergeant (now Lieutenant) Davies, 3rd Glamorgan, with a grand total of 311.
