Shooting Reports for June 1904

Whit Monday was the traditional day for the Volunteers' Shoot promoted by the Nottinghamshire Rifle Association. Last year (1903) no report was located in the papers, though the Meeting did take place. This year no report has yet been found of the results; but the match was postponed from May to Monday, June 20th, as evidenced by these two extracts of the Regimental Orders which regularly appeared in the Nottingham Evening Post.

The first shoot of Notts. and Derby Division of the English Twenty Club took place on the 27th May on the Trent Range, in dull light, and with a variable wind. The distances shot were 200, 500, and 600 yards. The scores of 90 and upwards were:—

   200  500  600  Ttl.
Lieut. T.A. Clench 34 32 32 98
Q-M-S W. Comery 35 31 29 95
Corporal W. Herrick 34 31 29 94
Sergeant J.G. Briggs 33 33 28 94
Col.-Sergt. C. Marshall 32 34 27 93
Sergt. O.E. Allsop 33 32 28 93
Corporal J. Lane 24 31 27 92
Sergeant T. Gee 34 33 24 91
Private R. Lawton 34 29 27 90

It would be interesting to learn how the Notts. Civilian Rifle Club handicapping system was worked. Mr. W. Ashby was an experienced shot; but he seems to have been hard done by the system as recorded at the Club&aps;s second competition.

Nottingham Evening Post, Thursday, 9 June 1904

NOTTS. CIVILIAN RIFLE CLUB

The second competition of this season was shot on the Trent Range yesterday. There was only a moderate attendance, and the following cards were returned:—

Name   200   500   600   Hcp   Total
A.E. Heazell 23 24 23 30 100
J.T. Radford 33 26 17 22 98
W. Ashby 29 30 28 0 87

After their first shoot on May 27th, the English Twenty Club second shoot for the Notts and Derbys. District took place on Friday, June 17th. Mr. W. Ashby lead the scores with a 100 ex 105; but it was not enough to beat Lieutenant T.A. Clinch's aggregate for the EXX Jewel of 197. Mr.Ashby had suffered a miserable 85 on the first shoot.

ENGLISH TWENTY CLUB
SECOND COMPETITION AT TRENT

The second of the two competitions in connection with the Notts. and Derbyshire District of the English Twenty Club took place at Trent yesterday. Mr. W. Ashby succeeded in making the coveted "century". The prize, a jewel, is awarded to the competitor making the highest aggregate of the two shoots. This was won by Lieutenant T.A. Clinch, with the fine total of 197, out of a possible 210. The shooting was held under the supervision of Major J. Ashworth, the district superintendent. Appended are the details of the second shoot:—

Lieutenant J. Hardstaff 84 84 168

Another local shooting club is mentioned in this article: the Midland Railway Company Rifle Club. Most of the names will be recognised as Robin Hood Rifles volunteers.

The article also mentions the second shoot of the Notts. and Derbys. District of the English Twenty Club shoot for the EXX Jewel; but appeasr to have mistaken the final result based on the aggregates.

Derby Daily Telegraph, Monday, 20 June 1904

M.R. Rifle Club Shoot: – The members of the Railway Company Rifle Club held a competition on the Volunteer Rifle Range on Wednesday evening last to decide the winner of the Astor medal, which entitles the holder to shoot in the Donegal Cup Competition at Bisley next month. The first five are:—

   200   500   600   Total.
Capt. P.M. Payne 32 29 25 86
Col.-sergt. J.S. Huson 33 30 22 85
Sergt. W. Wallace 34 26 24 84
Private F.W. Bracegirdle 32 31 13 76
Mr. J. Dobson 27 28 20 76

Captain Payne wins the medal. The above list shows the Volunteers to be well to the front when out-door shooting takes place. It will also be noted that the winner is a Robin Hood, and Derby Volunteers will regret that Colour-Sergeant Huson lost by the odd point. Although the best of feeling exists between the 1st.V.B. and the Robins the former would like to see one of their own men "on top". They will look to Colour-Sergeant Huson to amend that 600 shoot at an early date.

English Twenty Club: – The second shoot of the Notts. and Derbys. District of the English Twenty Club took place on Friday at the Trent Range. The prize jewel goes to Mr W. Ashby with a score of 100, a truly fine performance. The 1st Derby men shooting were:—

   200   500   600   Total.
Major Hunter 28 32 30 90
Col.-Sergt. C. Marshall 31 32 27 90
Sergt. J.G. Briggs 31 28 23 82

The weather in June is generally the best of the summer and clearly this was so on the occasion of the 4th Battalion Aggregate Competition here reported. Note the early start time of seven o'clock; but then there was no British Summer Time in force and would not be until over ten years later.

Nottingham Evening Post, Thursday, 23 June 1904

SHOOTING AT TRENT
R.H.R. 4th BATTALION AGGREGATE COMPETITION.

Charming weather was associated with the last of the four Battalion Aggregate Competitions organised in connection with the Robin Hood Rifles. The Beautiful surroundings of Trent Range looked at their very best, and there was brilliant sunshine throughout the whole of the proceedings. A moderate but somewhat variable wind which was blowing from the right occasionally interfered somewhat with calculations, but generally speaking, the shoot could not have been held on a better day. The conditions were as usual, seven shots and a sighter, and the first squad went down soon after seven o'clock in the morning. The principal scores up to four o'clock are appended:—

   200   500   600   Tl.
Lance-Segeant H. Clayson (G2) 33 33 28 94
Sergeant J.W. Hall (E2) 28 29 34 91
Corporal G.W. Comery (G1) 32 33 26 91
Private T. Lane (C2) 32 28 28 88
Sergeant J.W. Smith (B1) 33 31 24 88
Private J.C. Banyard (B1) 29 28 29 86
Corporal B.R. Smedley (A1) 28 31 27 86
Sergeant J.R. Coupe (E1) 30 31 25 86
Colour-Sergeant F. Goodliffe (J1) 32 29 25 86
Lance-Corporal T. Robinson (A1) 32 32 22 86
Lieutenant J.L. Elder (F2) 29 30 26 85
Mr. W. Ashby (hon. member) 32 26 26 84
Sergeant G.E. Wheeldon (F1) 32 24 28 84

Our final reports for June cover the North Midland Brigade Cup Competition, which did not take place in typical June balmy weather. Indeed the Nottingham Evening Post report does not even mention the scores or the winners; but this might also be because the paper went to press in the afternoon and the match might not have been decided in time. The second report from the Derby Daily Telegraph appeared over a week later.

Nottingham Evening Post, Saturday, 25 June 1904

SHOOTING AT TRENT
NORTH MIDLAND BRIGADE CUP COMPETITION

The annual competition for the Brigade Cup, presented by the officers of the North Midland Brigade, was decided this afternoon at Trent Range. Teams of sixteen competed, representing the Robin Hoods, 2nd Derbys. and 4th Notts., the 1st Derbys. standing down. The weather was by no means favourable to the compilation of high scores, both wind and light being variable, especially during the first stage of the competition at 200 yards range. The wind changed from right to left and back again with disconcerting persistency at first, but later on matters improved to some extent, and the shooting proceeded under somewhat steadier conditions. It was a cold, cheerless day, however, until towards evening, with rain frequently threatening.

Derby Daily Telegraph, Monday, 4 July 1904

Sherwood Foresters' Brigade Cup. — The annual shoot for the cup presented by the officers took place on Saturday last at Trent Range. Owing to a "night attack", or some other cause, the 1st Derbys were not represented; this is to be regretted. Teams of 16 of the Robin Hoods, 2nd Derbys, and 4th Notts. competed. The lowest scores in each team were "counted out". Wind and light were variable, and caused a great deal of trouble. The conditions were three ranges, 200, 500, and 600, with seven shots and a sighter at each. At the completion of 200 the scores were:– Robin Hoods 473, 2nd Derbys 465, 4th Notts. 424. At the 500 yards the Robins still led, their scores totalling 456, with the 2nd Derbys 441, and the 4th Notts 396. At 600 the Robin Hoods made 416, the 2nd Derbys 391, and the 4th Notts 371. The aggregate totals were:– Robin Hoods 1,342, 2nd Derbys 1,297, 4th Notts 1,191. Private Jaffery, of the 2nd Derbys. made an individual score of 95, the highest in the match.
