Robin Hood Rifles Matches August to October 1902

The quantity and quality of shooting taking place at Trent Range and being reported in the local newspaper seems to be on the up during 1902. The reports on this page cover some new competitions not mentioned before, including new sponsors, Mr. Jesse Boot, who gave a challenge bowl for teams of 12, and Mr. W. Hulse, who gave a new cup for competition by recent recruits.

ROBIN HOOD RIFLES
SHOOTING AT TRENT

The last in the series of five battalion aggregate competitions arranged in connection with the Robin Hood Rifles was decided at Trent Range today. The conditions are similar to those which prevail in the first stage of the King's Prize, and the aggregate of the four highest scores of each competitor count for the prizes which have been supplemented by those given in previous years for the battalion annual shoot. A feature of this season's battalion aggregate shoots has been the interest manifested by the younger shots, created doubtless by the offer of special prizes and a challenge cup presented by Mr. W. Hulse to last year's recruits. There was again a big entry, and when shooting commenced at seven o'clock a right rear wind was blowing and the light was moderate, but going down with the first squad Sergeant H. St. Leo Smith put on 97, and Colour-Sergeant F. Goodliffe (94) and Private G.W. Comery (92) were both early visitors to the range. At four o'clock the principal scores were as follows:–

     200    500    600    Tl.
Sergeant H. Smith (A1) 33 32 32 97
Colour-Sergeant F. Goodliffe (J1) 34 31 29 94
Private G.W. Comery (G1) 34 29 29 92
Corporal L. Duckett (A1) 30 29 31 90
Colour-Sergeant A. Sibert (J2) 28 33 29 90

ROBIN HOOD RIFLES
SHOOTING AT TRENT

The final shoot in connection with the "Mason" Long Range Competition, arranged for members of the Robin Hood Rifles, took place at Trent Range to-day. The prizes, numbering 20, include £10 presented by Mr. T. Mason and a number given by ladies and gentlemen in the city, and three are awarded for the aggregate of the three highest scores of each competitor in the four contests. The conditions allow ten shots and two sighters at 800 yards, in any position, at Bisley first class targets. There were only 44 entries, and when firing commenced at seven o'clock the wind was steady, but the light was very hazy. Lance- Corporal C.E. Page, of A company, 1st Battalion, going down with the first squad, started with a magpie, and afterwards got seven bulls and two inners with his remaining shots. Sergeant S.H. Page putting on 43 an hour later. Quartermaster- Sergeant W. Comery (B2), and Corporal L. Duckett, Lance-Corporal P. Robinson, and Sergeant H. St. Leo Smith, all members of A company, 1st Battalion, all made 43, and at four o'clock the principal scores were as follows:–

Lance-Corporal C.E. Page (A1)    46
Sergeant S.H. Page (A1) 43

SHOOTING AT TRENT

The shooting took place at the Trent Range on Saturday in the first stage of the competition for the "Jesse Boot" Challenge Bowl and £8 and other prizes. Teams of 12 men from each company of the Robin Hood Rifles compete, the conditions being seven shots at 200, 500, and 600 yards, and the four teams making the highest aggregate scores take part in the final shoot for the cup. The four highest aggregates on Saturday were made by G Company, 1st Battalion, 975; A Company, 1st Battalion, 971; C Company, 2nd Battalion, 945; and C Company, 1st Battalion, 928. The annual competition for the K" Cup, open to cyclist companies, was also decided on Saturday, J Company, 1st Battalion, being the winners.

EXTRAORDINARY VOLLEY SHOOTING

At the annual volley firing at the range of the Gainsborough volunteer companies on Saturday, an extraordinary record was made by one squad of 15 men. With seven rounds per man, the target was hit 102 times out of a possible 105, a remarkable performance, and one which is a long way ahead of all previous range records. The dummy figure on the left of the target was completely blown away. Major Kelsey and Captain Marshall were in charge of the range.
