Reports from June/July 1895 including
the Nottinghamshire Rifle Association 35th annual prize meeting

Grantham range was the venue for the 35th Annual Prize Meeting at which Sergeant-Instructor Prattinton made the top score, winning the Nottinghamshire Rifle Association silver medal and being invited to shoot for the Army Sixty at Aldershot and possibly qualify for the Army Eight shooting team.

Meanwhile the English Eight had a shoot at Clay Cross, a range not mentioned before in these transcriptions. Many familiar names from Nottinghamshire are listed in the table of scores.

Sergeant-Instructor Prattinton, of the Retford Rifle Corps, who won the silver medal and first prize of the Nottinghamshire Rifle Association on Saturday, has been selected by the committee of the Army Rifle Association to form one of the Army Sixty to shoot at Aldershot on July 1st and 2nd for prizes and places in the Army Eight.

ENGLISH TWENTY CLUB AT CLAY CROSS.

On Monday Captain G.M. Jackson, commanding G Company, 2nd Volunteer Battalion Derby Regiment, placed the Clay Cross rifle range at the disposal of the English Twenty Club. Sergeant Draycott, of the Robin Hood Rifles, was in charge of the team, and Sergeant-Instructor Perkins, of the G Company of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion Derby Regiment, was in charge of the range. The conditions were seven shots each at 200, 500, and 600 yards, with two sighting shots at each distance, Bisley targets. Scores:-

The competition for Colonel Seely's Challenge Cup for sergeants, shot for on handicap terms, took place on the range at Grantham, kindly lent for the occasion by Major Hutchinson, 2nd V.B. Lincolnshire Regiment, on Thursday and Saturday, The weather throughout both days was of a fairly satisfactory character. Sergeant S.H. Page (A Company) was the winner of the cup for the year. In connection with this competition a prize value of two guineas is given by the Non-Commissioned Officers' Club, Srgeant T. Loach being the winner. The following are the 12 highest scores.
