Robin Hoods Match at Melton Mowbray
The provision of a new range for the Robin Hoods had still not materialised by May 1893. Shooting was continuing but with ever increasing concern for the future. The report of a match held at Melton Mowbray bemoans the lack of a range and regular practice which were effecting the reputation of the Robin Hoods for accurate shooting. Nevertheless they did manage to win the match against the Leicestershire Rifle Volunteers.
On Whit-Monday a few members of the Robin Hood Rifles journeyed to Melton for the purpose of shooting a friendly match with the members of Major Powell's Company of the 1st Leicestershire R.V. The Robin Hoods have unfortunately for three years had no range of their own for practice purposes, and have been indebted on several previous occasions to Major Powell for the use of his fine range. The match on Monday was notable as showing the effects the want of a range has had on the shooting of the Nottingham men, as although Sergeant St. Leo Smith managed to compile the fine total of 90 out of a possible 105 points, the shooting on the whole was of a very poor order. We understand that in all probability there is a chance of the battalion having a range provided very shortly, and hope such will be the case, as there can be little doubt that the shooting team will lose the position they have had so many years as one of the crack teams of the volunteer force. Through the kindness of the officers of the Melton team refreshments were provided on the range, and a most enjoyable day was spent. The following were the full scores; ranges 200, 500, 600 yards; seven shots each; Bisley targets:–
