Shooting Matches Held in 1893
Whilst not strictly part of the history of the Nottinghamshire Rifle Association, this transcript shows where shooting that was reported in the Nottinghamshire papers was taking place and who was shooting. The first match was held in Lincolnshire and clearly the Nottinghamshire Guardian thought it would be of interest to its readers even though it did not feature any Notts. shooters or volunteers.

An interesting rifle match between past and present members of the F Company Rifle Volunteers, Lincolnshire, took place at Spalding on Easter Monday afternoon. The teams consisted of 12 men on each side, the lowest two being counted out. The distances were 200, 500, and 600 yards, seven shots at each range, Bisley targets and scoring. The weather was very favourable for good shooting, and in the end the present members won by 51 points. Captain-Surgeon England headed the list with 93, Colour-Sergeant Bulmer, G.M., coming second with 90. The following were the scores :—

The same edition of the Nottinghamshire Guardian also carried in an adjacent column a report from Grantham of a match between the local club and a team of Leicestershire Volunteers. Unfortunately the report does not include the number of shots at each range to count. However, the scores suggest it was probably the customary seven as Sergeant Freeman of Leicester made 31, 28, 23, for a leading total of 82.

This last very short report from the Nottingham Evening Post of August 14th is much closer to home with the venue being the still used Epperstone range. It involved two teams from the local volunteers, one from the Robin Hood Rifles and the other from the 4th Notts. The 4th Notts were victorious.

On Saturday last, a rifle match took place on the above range, between the "A" Company R.H.R., and "E" Company (Thorneywood) 4th Notts. The competition was between eight men per company, and the conditions, Bisley targets and scoring, 200 and 500 yards, seven shots at each distance. The day was beautifully fine, but a variable cross wind made good shooting somewhat difficult. As will be seen from the scores the county team was victorious by 18 points. Thorneywood Chase - 200 yards, points 210; 500 yards, points 198; total 408. R.H.R. - 200 yards, points 179; 500 yards, points 211; total 390.
