The 1888 Annual Volunteer Match

The 28th Annual Prize Meeting sponsored by the Nottinghamshire Rifle Association in support of the Volunteer movement was held at the Town Butts on 26th June 1888.

The weather conditions were reportedly not good for shooting with a variable wind accompanied by gusts and changing light.

The Nottinghamshire RA Silver medal was won by Sergeant W. Comery of the Robin Hood Rifles with a total of 96 ex 105 and a one point lead over second placed Lieutenant Drury of the 2nd Notts battalion.

NOTTS RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

The 28th annual prize meeting of the above was held at the Town Butts on the 26th ult., when the Bronze Medal of the National Rifle Association, and £30 divided into 20 prizes for Martini-Henry rifles, and eight for carbines, were competed for, the conditions being as in Part 1 of the first stage of the Queen's prize, 1888. The weather was unfavourable for good shooting, the wind being very variable and gusty, and the light uncertain all the day. The Bronze Medal was won by Sergt. W. Comery, Robin Hood Rifles, with the excellent score of 96 points, and he is now entitled to shoot for the Prince of Wales's Prize at Wimbledon.

The competition was under the management of Surgeon-Major J. O'C. Hynes (hon. sec.) and Pte. H. W. Davis (assistant honorary secretary) to whom the thanks of the members are due. Staff-Sergeant Jerram was range officer and umpire. The following are the winners in order of merit:–
