The 1878 Eighteenth Annual Volunteer Match
and Team Selection for Wimbledon
The Nottinghamshire Guardian's Volunteer reporter gave an account of the selection shooting to determine the best shots to represent the Robin Hood Rifles at the Inter-regional Match and the National Rifle Association's Wimbledon Meeting.
At the head of his article was a table of forthcoming events which includes the Nottinghamshire R.A. Match and the Wimbledon Meeting. It also mentions other competitions from around the country including the Altcar range in Lancashire which is still operational.
There follows the list of successful shooters from the eliminators who will be considered for the Robin Hood Rifles teams.
There is an interesting footnote to the report: Martini-Henry rifles will be issued to the successful competitors. So, after much practice shooting, the team were being issued with a different rifle for the upcoming matches. This appears on the face of it to be less than ideal; but we do not know what rifle they had been shooting with and whether the Martini-Henry was far superior in performance or obligatory for the matches.

The following is the result of the shooting for the selection of those members of the Robin Hoods who are to represent the regiment in the Inter-Regional Match and the Queen's Prize, ranges 200, 500, and 600 yards, seven rounds at each, Wimbledon targets and scoring, 1878. For the Inter-Regional Match members have fired down the range five times, the four highest scores of the five to count for the aggregate. For the Queen's Prize they have shot over the same ranges twice. As shown below, Sergeant G. Carder, No. 9 Company, heads both contests with an excellent average:–

Martini-Henry rifles will be issued at the Drill Hall on Thursday evening next, at 7 o'clock, to the successful competitors.
The Eighteenth Annual Volunteer's Prize Match promoted by the Nottinghamshire Rifle Association was carried in several local papers of which the Nottinghamshire Guardian had the clearest quality newsprint.
The match began on Tuesday, June 18th, and was completed in a second round at Newark on the 22nd.
The programme of shooting was again amended for this year. The open competition was shot over three ranges, 200, 500 and 600 yards as usual, with the match for members of the Association being shot concurrently using the scores from 200 and 500 yards only. There was £20 worth of prizes to be had at each range and a further £30 to be won from the aggregate scores. £9 was to be won by Association members in the closed competition. The total prize pot came to £99.
Across the three ranges, nobody dominated the field. There were different winners at each distance. The winner of the aggregate with a score of 88 was Private T Vickers closely followed by Colour-Sergeant W Brookhouse on the same score. They had been matching scores through the ranges: at 200 yards both scored 29, at 500 yards 30, and at 600 yards 29. How the ties at each range were resolved is not revealed.
In the Members competition Private R Brown secured first place on 63. His 200 and 500 yards scores were his best, and indeed he had made 4th place in the open aggregate. Had he maintained his scoring into the 600 yards range he might have won the aggregate too. He made 31, 32 and 23 and came 4th.

NOTTS. RIFLE ASSOCIATION.
The eighteenth prize meeting of the Notts. Rifle Association commenced at the Town Butts on Tuesday, under favourable circumstances as regards the weather. The wind in the morning was of that "fish-tail" kind which at all times is sorely puzzling to the competitors. Nevertheless, some excellent shooting was made. During the day Colonel Eyre, of the Administrative Battalion, was on the ground, as also was Colonel Seely, of the Robin Hoods. The following is the list of winners, who alone can compete at Newark on Saturday next for the "blue riband" - the N.R.A. bronze medal:–

The second and final day of shooting took place at Newark on Saturday, June 22nd, for the 39 competitors who had won prizes on the first day. In the event only 30 actually took part. The weather conditions were perfect for shooting so says the report; but the aggregates at the same three ranges tended to be lower than those achieved on the first day at Nottingham. There was a prize pot of £15 for the second day.
In the lead on the day was Corporal H Duckett with 85, followed by Colour-Sergeant J Cumberland on 82 and Colour-Sergeant W Brookhouse on 80. Sergeant G Carder, who had featured in the team selection shoots, came 4th on 79.
When the aggregate scores for the two days were totalled up it was found that Duckett and Brookhouse had tied on 168 points. Cumberland with 81 brought forward made a total of 163. Private T Vickers who had lead at Nottingham with the same score as Brookhouse on 88 did not appear on the prize list for Newark.
A shoot off to settle the tie was accompanied by a breathless silence. Each rifleman had to fire seven rounds at 600 yards. Duckett made 19; but Brookhouse made 23 and was declared winner of the National Rifle Association bronze medal and the invitation to take part in the Prince of Wales' Prize at the Wimbledon Meeting of the National Rifle Association in July.
Supplement to The Nottinghamshire Guardian, Friday, 28 June, 1878.
The eighteenth prize meeting of the Notts. Rifle Association was brought to a conclusion on the range of the Newark Rifle Volunteers, on Saturday last. The arrangements, so kindly undertaken by Captain Tallents and Quarter-master Shepperd, were everything that could be wished for. The weather was most beautiful, and for rifle shooting, from noon to the close, was what the most fastidious rifleman could wish for. There was not a breath of air to mar the aim; indeed, there was not sufficient breeze to blow away the smoke from the competitors' rifles. There were 39 winners at the first day's shooting at Nottingham eligible to compete in this competition, and of these 30 came to the targets. The best aggregate of both days is to be the winner of the N.R.A. bronze medal. The excitement at the finish reached the highest pitch when the honorary secretary announced a "tie" between Colour-sergeant Brookhouse and Corporal H. Duckett, both of the 4th company of Robin Hoods, who had each made the splendid aggregate of 168 points. Amidst breathless silence these two marksmen came forward to "shoot off" by firing seven rounds at the 600 yards range, the former scoring 23 and the latter 19. Colour-Sergeant Brookhouse was therefore declared the winner of the "blue riband" of the meeting, and will compete for H.R.H. the Prince of Wales' Prize at the forthcoming meeting of the N.R.A. at Wimbledon. The following are the highest scores and winners at Newark with their share of the £15 prize money:–
Name, Rank, and Corps | 200, 500 & 600 yards agg | Prizes |
Corpl H. Duckett, 4th R.H.R. | 85 | £2 0 0 |

Corpl. T.N. Coles, 1st R.H.R. | 75 | 1 0 0 |
The result of the team selections made for the Wimbledon Meeting were officially published on Monday, July 8th, in the Regimental Orders printed in the Nottingham Evening Post. This was the same day that the N.R.A. meeting started.
The riflemen for the four competitions were listed in the Orders; but as you can see the list for H.M. the Queen's Prize is exactly the same as that for the St. George's Vase. Colour-Sergeant William Brookhouse is listed for the Prince of Wales' Prize.
There was a team for the Belgian Challenge Cup for volley firing at 400 yards under the command of Major Henry E. Hunt. This is mainly drawn from the two above teams but with the addition of Colour-Sergeant Brookhouse, Sergeant R. Hollis, and Corporal R. Coupe.
The number of Robin Hood Rifles in the Wimbledon contingent was 35, plus Major Hunt and maybe other senior officers.
