The Fourteenth Annual Volunteer Prize Meeting
The results of the Fourteenth Annual Volunteer Competition were published in the Nottingham and Midland Counties Daily Express, part of the Nottingham Journal press. The article is dated 20th June 1874 and the event took place on the two days 15th and 16th June.
The weather seems to have been reasonable, except for the strong wind coming from between one and two o'clock direction. The range was aligned with targets at the north end. From what we know of the range layout, there were no more than three lanes available. Sighters are not mentioned.
The winner of the aggregate for the first day's shooting was Sergeant H Davis with a score of 76 gaining him a prize of £10.
Under the results of Competition A are listed range prizes for the top three scores of £1 each, shared out in the event of tied scores. These results raise questions as to how they were arranged. The names in the range lists do not match ones in the aggregate listing and surely the winning aggregate of Sergeant Davis would have put him in at least one of the range lists.
Competition B, on the second day, has a shorter prize list but generally better scores on the same course of fire. Corporal G Carder was top scorer with 80 points. Sergeant Davis was in sixth place with 73 points; but these were enough to give him the two day aggregate prize of £3 plus the National Rifle Association bronze medal, with a total of 149 points. Carder was in third place with 145. Sergeant McLeod of the 4th Notts. battalion came a close second to Davis on 148 points. Having been 2 points behind the winner after the first day's shooting, McLeod only managed to narrow the gap by one point on the second day.
Also shot on the second day was the Association's competition for members only, which was won by Private W Miller with a score of 44. It seems likely that the Association was shot over two ranges.

MEETING OF THE COUNTY RIFLE ASSOCIATION.
The fourteenth annual competition of the Nottinghamshire Rifle Association took place at the Town Butts on Monday and Tuesday last. Competition A took place on the first day, and competition B on the second day. Several competitors came from Newark, Mansfield, Worksop, and neighbourhood. The wind was blowing strong from the N.E.. On both days the conditions were seven rounds at 200 yards, seven at 500 yards and 600 yards, any position. Sergeant H Davis carried off the two principal events of the meeting, namely, first prize in the A competition, value £10 (and the much-coveted bronze medal, given by the National Rifle Association) and £3 for the highest aggregate score or the two days. Private W. Miller won the first prize in the association competition (open to members only). Corporal G. Carder made an excellent score in competition B, carrying the first prize. Appended are the scores:–
