The Thirteenth Annual Prize Meeting 1873

In the years following the Tenth Annual Prize Meeting in 1870, reports of the annual matches seemed to disappear from the Nottingham papers. Indeed there might be gap in the online newspaper records for Nottinghamshire during this period.

However, we have now located some reports, mainly of the weekly Regimental Orders, which indicate that the annual match for the volunteers was continuing each year between 1871 and 1887.

The report of the 1873 match appears in the Nottinghamshire Guardian for Friday, June 27th and covers both days of the meeting in some detail. It is reproduced here in full.

It would appear that the weather on the 23rd and 24th June was favourable and the number of entries for the competitions were satisfactorily up on previous years. The scores were good and the eventual results were close with tie shoots being needed to separate placings.

NOTTS. RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

The thirteenth annual meeting of this association was held on Monday and Tuesday last at the Nottingham butts under circumstances of a successful character. The association which has during its career done much to encourage good shooting, has this year introduced some modifications into its programme. Instead of range prizes, the committee have introduced throughout a system of aggregate prizes. Last year £60 19s. 3d. was received in entrance money, but under this year's plan £76 18s. 9d. was received. The number of competitors was larger than last year, and it is satisfactory to note that more of the county men put in an appearance. Several new members have joined the Association, but in looking over the list of subscribers we find that there are only three from the yeomanry. This ought not to be the case, as it prevents better prizes being given for yeomanry competition. As regards the incident of the meeting, we may state that Colonel Wright was present, and took part in Monday's competition. As will be seen from the scores published below, the first prize of the first day's shooting was taken by Sergeant Birks, of the Mansfield Company, who also ran Corporal Mayfield very close for the medal. There was some good shooting for the Yeomanry prizes, the tie between Private Wheatley, of the S.N.Y.C., and Sergeant Johnson (Sherwood Ranges) being productive of considerable excitement. In shooting off both made bull's eyes; Wheatley went on, and made another; Johnson then made a centre, which consequently put his opponent first. We ought to state that the clear colouring of the targets, by means of a patent paint, the invention of Captain Lysons, of Gloucester, gave great satisfaction. The full scores (supplied to us by Sergeant Toplis, hon. Secretary to the Association) are as follows:–
