Open Consultation on Firearms Licensing - Sound Moderators

The Home Office opened a public consultation on 21 Feb 2024 on a proposal to use a legislative reform order to remove sound moderators from firearms licensing controls.

The consultation closes at 10am on 2 April 2024.

The Home Office is seeking views on their proposal to use a Legislative Reform Order made under the Legislative and Regulatory Reform Act 2006 to remove a firearm accessory, known as a sound moderator, from firearms licensing controls.

They say "Sound moderators currently need to be covered by a firearms certificate, issued by the police. Sound moderators are not dangerous as firearms, and removing them from firearms licensing controls does not have any implications for public safety."

"The proposal is to amend the definition of firearm in section 57(1)(d) of the Firearms Act 1968 to remove the reference to sound moderators."

Details of the proposal and ways to respond can be found on the gov.uk website by following this link https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/firearms-licensing-sound-moderators

We hope all shooters who have an interest in this matter will respond to the consultation.
